John French says...

"It really is easy!"

If you have basic sewing skills, YOU can craft a successful slipcover!! Never before has this subject been taught with such simplicity, clarity and thoroughness, making it truly easy and great fun!
I so encourage you to give it a try. A whole new world of fun and accomplishment awaits!

Heres how I make it so easy!
  • I stress simplification. Let’s remove the fear involved here. Compare the two photos here:

In the first photo, the slipcover process appears to be complicated and involved because you have the different layers on top of each other. By simply removing the pillows , cushions, and the slipcover body, you can see the simple shape of the sofa. The fact that the cushions are removable and will be covered independently only makes the construction task easier. "Cushion construction" is included in the Level 1 video and again, I make the process simple and logical!

  • The courses are specifically designed for the beginner. We assume that the student has only basic sewing skills. (Can operate machine, run a straight stitch, turn a corner, sew with a half inch seam allowance) The sewing involved is not complicated and does not use dressmaking skills. Learning the basics is very straight forward and dressmaking skills are not used. If you have them, all the better and once you have your basic pattern made, the sky is the limit and you will have endless opportunities to go into detail but this is all optional and not necessary to make a successful cover.

  • A basic home sewing machine is all that is required. You don’t need zig zag, blind or/and fancy stiches whatsoever.

  • The course teaches a pattern method (using muslin). This is the easiest method for beginners because they know they can correct mistakes or change there minds easily. In addition, the pattern can be used to make additional slipcovers for different looks.

  • The instructions remain logical. We approach each project in three sections:(This applies to when we make our pattern and when we sew the sections together.)
We focus on the back: Click on any of the pictures
    to see a larger version!
    We focus on the arms:
    We focus on the deck:
These parts are then sewn together, cushions are completed and the slipcover is done!
See, this process is rather simple once you approach it in a logical order! Basic Principles of Slipcovers Level 1 keeps the seams to a minimum. Fancy skirts, welt cord and open ended zippers are omitted keeping the process very simple (these can be learned in Level 2 if desired).

  • We are in no hurry! Other DVD’s try to teach the entire subject in less than an hour leaving the student lost and frustrated. DIYslipcovers takes great pains to be thorough and complete. Bob, the cameraman did a great job in making sure the lens was positioned exactly where you want your eyes to be.

  • I promote a relaxed frame of mind. I have always found slipcovers to be very forgiving of errors. You may know something went off a bit but others usually have no clue! This is important, especially to the beginner! If you simply stay calm and committed to completing , you will be so thrilled and amazed at your finished project. We are making a slipcover, not reupholstering, so “loosen up a bit”. Keep your head and the fit of your cover nicely relaxed. You don’t wear your clothes skin tight so keep that same frame of mind when you make your slipcover pattern... Nicely relaxed, yet still fitted
